During our stay we based ourselves at Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa Merlin Beach, explored the coastline, visited nearby islands including Phi Phi Islands and Bamboo Island, snorkelled with tropical fish directly from our hotel beach and experienced some of the best scenery Thailand has to offer.

Where we stayed in Phuket
Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa Merlin Beach
One of the highlights of our Phuket trip was staying at Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa Merlin Beach.
Although many visitors stay directly in Patong, we found Merlin Beach offered the perfect balance between convenience and relaxation. The resort sits just outside the busy centre of Patong, allowing easy access to attractions while providing a much quieter atmosphere.
What really surprised us was the beach itself. Unlike many hotel beaches around the world, Merlin Beach offered excellent snorkelling directly from shore. During our stay we regularly spotted tropical fish just metres from the sand, making it feel like a mini snorkelling excursion without ever leaving the resort.
The hotel also worked perfectly as a base for exploring the island. Most tours offered convenient hotel pick-up, making day trips extremely easy.

Most tours visit several iconic locations including Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, Viking Cave and Pileh Lagoon, while also providing opportunities to snorkel in crystal-clear water surrounded by tropical marine life.
During our own tour, Maya Bay completely lived up to the hype. Surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and some of the clearest water we saw in Thailand, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever visited.
The snorkelling was equally impressive. We encountered sea turtles, tropical fish, lobsters, sea snakes and even a harmless jellyfish that one of our guides carefully demonstrated to the group.

Phang Nga Bay & James Bond Island
Another must-do excursion from Phuket is a trip to Phang Nga Bay.
This region is famous for its dramatic limestone karsts, hidden caves and emerald-green waters. Many tours include a visit to James Bond Island, made famous by the film The Man with the Golden Gun.

Kata Beach was one of our favourite areas in Phuket.
The scenery is beautiful, the atmosphere is noticeably more relaxed than Patong and the beach is ideal for swimming during the dry season.

Nai Harn Beach
Located in the south of Phuket, Nai Harn Beach feels more local and less commercialised than many of the island’s more famous beaches.
Surrounded by green hills and clear water, it’s a fantastic choice for travellers looking to escape the crowds.
Explore Phuket Old Town
Many visitors spend their entire holiday on Phuket’s beaches without ever seeing the island’s cultural side.
Phuket Old Town offers a completely different experience.

Visible from many parts of southern Phuket, the statue has become one of the island’s most visited attractions.
While the statue itself is impressive, the real highlight is the panoramic viewpoint overlooking Phuket’s coastline.
On a clear day, visitors can enjoy sweeping views across Kata Beach, Karon Beach, Chalong Bay and the Andaman Sea.

Visit Wat Chalong Temple

This was our most memorable day. We boarded a speedboat early in the morning and spent the day exploring several iconic islands.

2. James Bond Island & Sea Canoeing
Another full and fascinating day.
We paddled through caves, lagoons and tucked-away inlets — all with the dramatic limestone cliffs towering above us. We also visited the famous floating village of Koh Panyee, which has its own floating football pitch!
One thing we’d do differently:

3. Ethical Elephant Sanctuary
As you know, we’re very conscious travellers, and choosing an ethical sanctuary was non-negotiable.
Our day included:
- Feeding the elephants
- Learning their histories
- Walking through the reserve
- Watching them bathe in a waterfall
- A relaxed Thai cooking class afterwards
It was humbling, peaceful and beautifully run — one of those experiences that stays with you.
