Our Favourite Place to Stay in Koh Samui — W Hotel Samui
If you’re looking for a truly unforgettable stay on Koh Samui, we can’t recommend the W Hotel Samui highly enough. It’s one of those rare resorts that gets everything right — the design, the service, the atmosphere, the attention to detail. From the moment you arrive, it feels like stepping into a private, luxurious world with the perfect balance of style and comfort.
The resort sits on a secluded stretch of coastline, offering sweeping views across the Gulf of Thailand. The villas are spacious, modern and beautifully designed, with private pools, plush bedding and thoughtful touches throughout. Ours felt like a quiet sanctuary — peaceful, private and incredibly comfortable.
But the real magic of the W is in the experience:
- Exceptional service — warm, attentive and impossibly smooth
- Incredible breakfast — easily one of the best we’ve had in Thailand
- Private beach — calm, clean and perfect for slow mornings
- Stunning infinity pool overlooking the sea
- Beautifully landscaped grounds — immaculate but still natural
The beach itself is the definition of serenity: soft sand, gentle waves and a feeling of privacy you don’t often find in popular destinations. Even at full capacity, the resort never feels busy.
Sunsets here are something special too — the sky seems to glow in layers of pink and gold, reflecting across the water and creating the most peaceful end to the day. We found ourselves drifting back to the same beachfront spot evening after evening just to take it all in.
If you’re looking for a resort that feels indulgent but relaxed, stylish but comfortable, and truly worthy of a special trip, The W Hotel Samui is an outstanding choice. It quickly became one of our favourite places we’ve stayed in Thailand, and it’s somewhere we would return to without hesitation.
Top Things to Do in Koh Samui
Here are the experiences that made our trip special — a balance of culture, food, beaches and adventure.

1. Ang Thong Marine Park — Our Full Experience
Our day exploring Ang Thong Marine Park was easily one of the most memorable experiences we had on Koh Samui. It’s one of those rare days that feels wonderfully full — a perfect blend of adventure, calm, and jaw-dropping scenery. If you’re planning a trip to Samui, this guided tour is a genuine highlight.
The day began with a smooth hotel pickup, followed by a short drive to Nathon Pier, where our boat and guides were waiting. Once onboard, we were welcomed with a light breakfast and a warm introduction from our guide, who outlined the plan for the day. Even from the pier, the views were beautiful — but nothing prepared us for what came next.
Kayaking at Koh Tai Plao
Our first stop was Koh Tai Plao, a rugged, dramatic island perfect for kayaking. We paddled into little coves, beneath towering limestone arches, through calm tunnels in the rock, and into a hidden lagoon that felt like a secret world. It was peaceful, scenic and surprisingly fun — a lovely mix of gentle activity and pure exploration.
The water was so inviting that I ended up jumping in for a swim before we even packed the kayaks away. Warm, clear and full of colour, it set the tone for the rest of the day.
Snorkelling in Crystal-Clear Waters
Snorkelling in Ang Thong Marine National Park was a real highlight. As soon as we slipped beneath the surface, we were surrounded by coral gardens and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish. The water was incredibly clear — bright blues and greens shimmering in the sunlight.
I loved how calm and peaceful everything felt underwater. At each snorkelling spot, we found something new: shoals of small fish rippling around the rocks, flashes of vivid colour near the corals, and gentle waves drifting us across sandy patches. Our guides clearly knew the best places to stop, and every location felt more beautiful than the last.
It was the kind of snorkelling experience that stays with you.
Lunch With a View
After snorkelling, we enjoyed a delicious lunch onboard as the boat cruised gently through the island chain. The scenery was spectacular. Ang Thong is formed of 42 protected islands, all dotted across the ocean like little emerald peaks. Even during this quiet moment, it felt like the adventure hadn’t stopped — there was always something beautiful to look at.
Emerald Lake at Koh Mae Ko
Our next stop was Koh Mae Ko, home to the famous Emerald Lake. After a short climb, we reached the viewpoint overlooking this bright, jewel-coloured lagoon. The contrast between the emerald water, dark limestone cliffs and deep blue ocean beyond was breathtaking.
It’s one of those views that simply doesn’t look real — and absolutely worth the short, sweaty climb to the top.
Koh Wua Talap — Hike, Kayak or Beach?
The final stop of the day was Koh Wua Talap, where the choice was completely up to us: kayak around the coastline, visit the Bua Bok Cave, relax on the beach or hike to the island’s dramatic viewpoint.
We chose the hike, and although it was steep in parts, the reward was phenomenal — a panoramic view of the entire marine park, with dozens of islands stretching out across the sea. It’s one of the most iconic viewpoints in all of Thailand, and standing at the top felt like something truly special.
After the hike, we spent a little time relaxing on the beach, enjoying the warm water and peaceful atmosphere before heading back to the boat.
Sunset Cruise Back to Samui
The journey back to Koh Samui was the perfect wind-down. Fresh fruit was served onboard, everyone relaxed into their seats, and we watched the islands fade slowly into the distance. It was blissful — tired in the best way, sun-kissed, salty-haired, and full of that warm feeling you get after a truly perfect day.
Would We Recommend It? Absolutely.
This tour is simply fantastic. It’s a full day, but never overwhelming — and Ang Thong is one of the most beautiful natural areas we’ve ever explored.
A small note:
If you prefer something gentler, are travelling with young children, or aren’t keen on kayaking, consider booking a cruise-style trip rather than a kayaking-focused tour. The scenery is just as impressive, but the pace is gentler and less physically demanding.
But for anyone comfortable with a little activity, this day truly has everything — kayaking, snorkelling, hiking, beautiful beaches, breathtaking viewpoints and calm cruising in between. We loved every moment.

2. Koh Samui Half-Day Highlights Tour — A Perfect Introduction to the Island
We started our time on Koh Samui with a guided half-day highlights tour, and it turned out to be the perfect way to get familiar with the island. Everything was effortless from the beginning — we were collected directly from our hotel in a comfortable, air-conditioned minivan, which made the morning feel relaxed from the outset.
Our first stop was Wat Plai Laem, a beautiful temple rich in colour and intricate design, where we learned a little about the island’s Chinese-Thai heritage. From there, we visited Wat Phra Yai, home to Samui’s iconic golden Big Buddha. It’s impressive in photos, but even more striking in person.
Next, we made our way to Lad Koh Viewpoint in Chaweng Noi. The panoramic views of the coastline were stunning, and it was a lovely moment to pause, take photos and enjoy the sea breeze. We then stopped at Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks, followed by a little free time for shopping in the area. The shops here were surprisingly good — not just typical market stalls — and we ended up picking up a few things.
One of the most fascinating moments of the day was visiting the mummified monk, a cultural experience that was both moving and surreal. We finished with a calm stop at Na Muang Waterfall, where the cool shade and flowing water offered the ideal end to the tour.
For anyone visiting Koh Samui, we highly recommend doing this tour at the very start of your trip. It’s a cost-effective, time-efficient way to see all of the island’s main highlights in just a few hours, and it gives you a lovely overview of the island before diving into the beaches and day trips.

3. Pig Island & Koh Tan Snorkelling Tour — Fun, Light-Hearted & Surprisingly Worth It
I’ll be the first to admit it — this was an Instagram-inspired booking. After seeing countless dreamy photos of people lounging on the sand beside adorable pigs, I was far too curious not to see what all the fuss was about. And honestly? I’m glad we gave in to the hype.
Our first stop was Koh Mat Sum (Pig Island), and it was every bit as picturesque as it looks online: soft white sand, turquoise water, and a handful of friendly pigs wandering freely around the beach. Yes, it’s undeniably touristy, and yes, it leans into the “Instagram moment” — but it’s also great fun. There’s something wonderfully ridiculous and joyful about sharing a beach with pigs, and we ended up enjoying it far more than we expected.
What surprised us most was learning that the pigs here are actually wild and roam the island naturally. It added a quirky authenticity to an experience we initially assumed would feel overly staged.
After Pig Island, we headed to Koh Tan for snorkelling, and this felt like the real heart of the tour. If you’ve followed our travels, you’ll know we try to snorkel wherever we go — and Koh Tan was a lovely spot with clear water, colourful fish and a calm, relaxed atmosphere. It balanced the playful chaos of Pig Island perfectly.
By the end of the day, we both agreed that although Instagram completely lured us in, it turned out to be a genuinely enjoyable outing — light-hearted, scenic, great value for money, and a fun addition to any Koh Samui itinerary.
4. Day Trip to Koh Phangan
A quick boat ride takes you to Koh Phangan, famous for its beaches, viewpoints and relaxed cafés. Even if you’re not there for a full-moon event, it’s a lovely island to explore for the day.

Koh Samui has a wonderfully diverse food scene, from simple local eateries to refined dining experiences worth dressing up for. These are the places that truly stood out during our trip — each memorable for its own reason, whether it was the flavours, the atmosphere or the overall experience.
🍣 Namu (W Hotel Samui)
Address: 4, 1 Mae Nam, Ko Samui, Surat Thani 84330
Located inside the W Hotel, Namu is one of the few hotel restaurants we’d ever recommend. It is on the pricier side, but if your budget allows, the quality truly justifies the cost. The Japanese cuisine is outstanding — refined, beautifully presented and full of bold yet balanced flavours. The setting, service and attention to detail elevate the experience even further. A special occasion spot, and absolutely worth it.
🍝 Pepenero Koh Samui
Address: 4/5 Moo 1, Ko Samui District 84330
Another non-Thai option that deserves a mention. Pepenero served some of the best Italian food we’ve had in a very long time — rich, comforting, perfectly cooked dishes that reminded us why Italian cuisine can be so unforgettable. It’s definitely on the higher end, but for anyone craving authentic Italian flavours on Samui, it’s a standout choice.
🍛 Ran Lan Saka Restaurant
Address: Mae Nam, Ko Samui District, Surat Thani 84330
For affordable, authentic Thai food, Ran Lan Saka was a brilliant find. We stopped here during one of our island explorations, craving something simple and genuinely local — and that’s exactly what we got. Great flavours, hearty portions and a true “no frills, all taste” type of restaurant. Perfect for a satisfying lunch or casual dinner.
🍽 Red Moon
Address: Fisherman’s Village, 12 Moo 1 Thanon Haad, Bo Put, Surat Thani 84320
A great last-minute discovery in Fisherman’s Village, Red Moon offers a mix of different cuisines, each dish cooked well and full of flavour. It’s relaxed, friendly and ideal for days when you want good food without overthinking it. A lovely addition to the Fisherman’s Village dining scene.
