A Well-Travelled Couple’s Honest Guide to Cyprus’ Most Beautiful Coastline

Welcome to Protaras — a sun-drenched, turquoise-water haven on the southeastern edge of Cyprus. If you’re dreaming of calm beaches, boat days, beautiful coastal strolls and a slightly slower pace than nearby Ayia Napa, you’re exactly in the right corner of the island.

As a couple who travel a lot, and who adore destinations with great food, warm seas and a gentle rhythm, Protaras was an absolute delight. In this guide, I’m going to walk you through everything worth doing here — from the beaches to the boat trips to the cliff-top walks — and share our honest thoughts throughout.

Protaras has an excellent food scene, ranging from traditional Cypriot tavernas to fresh seafood overlooking the sea, and even a few brilliant international restaurants. Below are the places we personally recommend — each chosen for atmosphere, quality, and that feeling of having discovered something special.

🐟 Spartiatis Restaurant

Spartiatis sits above Konnos Beach and offers one of the most beautiful dining views in the area. If you’re looking for a romantic evening, this is the spot. The restaurant specialises in fresh fish, prepared simply and perfectly. Pair it with the sunset and you have a truly memorable night.

🐠 Kalamies Restaurant

Another favourite for seafood lovers, Kalamies overlooks its own little beach, with gentle waves lapping beneath the terrace. Expect exceptionally fresh local fish and a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. Ideal for a slow lunch or early dinner.

🍖 Ttappis Tavern

Address: Stadiou 92, Paralimni 5280, Cyprus

A true local gem. Ttappis is all about traditional Cypriot cooking — grilled meats, homemade dips, salads and proper home-style flavours. If you want an authentic, no-frills meal away from the tourist strip, this is the place.

🎶 Pinia Restaurant

Address: Perneras Ave, Paralimni 5295, Cyprus

Pinia is well-loved for its traditional nights during peak season (Thursday–Sunday). If you’re in Protaras during summer, definitely check what’s on — the atmosphere is brilliant.
The menu changes slightly depending on the day, so trust the waiting staff and ask for their recommendations. Booking ahead is strongly advised.

🍲 Mousikos Restaurant

Address: 6, Sotira, Cyprus

Mousikos is one of the best places to experience proper Cypriot cooking. Everything here feels authentic and generous.
Our recommendation: Go for the Kleftiko or Lamb Souvla — both are outstanding — and enjoy them with a table full of sides. A wonderful, hearty meal.

🥩 Kamasias Tavern

Address: Daidalou 23, Paralimni 5281, Cyprus

Serena Beach Bar is one of the best places in the area if you’re in the mood for a proper beach party. Set right by the water, it offers a lively atmosphere, great music and a fun, holiday-friendly crowd. Parties and themed nights pop up frequently, so it’s worth checking their website or social pages to see what’s on during your stay.

🌴 Tulum Beach Bar

Address: Paralimni 5295, Cyprus

If you’re looking for something a little more raw and bohemian, Tulum Beach Bar is a great choice. Expect a younger crowd, barefoot dancing, DJ sets and beach parties that feel wonderfully unpolished in the best way. Check their Instagram to see upcoming events — it’s very vibe-dependent and always evolving.

🎸 House of Lithos

Address: 60, Pernera, Cyprus

House of Lithos was created by one of the well-loved acts from the Protaras Strip, and they’ve built a wonderful, intimate venue with consistently great live performances. If you appreciate live music over clubs, this is absolutely worth a visit. It’s relaxed, friendly and offers a nice break from the busier nightlife spots.

🌃 The Protaras Strip

The Protaras Strip itself offers a surprisingly diverse selection of evening entertainment, making it easy to wander and find something that suits your mood. The atmosphere is lively but friendly — great for couples, groups or families.

You’ll find:

  • Cocktail lounges

Protaras Swim Spot

🏖️ Best Swimming Spots in Protaras & Nearby Areas

One of the true joys of staying in Protaras is the sheer number of beaches and coves available — each with its own charm, energy and loyal following. Whether you prefer a lively family beach, a quiet local spot, or somewhere a little more atmospheric, the coastline here absolutely spoils you.

Below are the swimming spots we personally recommend in and around Protaras:

🌊 Vrissiana Beach

Great for: Families
Vrissiana is the main Protaras beach — long, sandy and very easy for families with children. The water is shallow and calm, and there are plenty of sunbeds, cafés and facilities behind the beach. A reliable all-rounder.

🌴 Fig Tree Bay

Great for: Everyone — but especially families
This is the beach Protaras is famous for, and for good reason. The water is unbelievably clear and stays shallow for ages, making it perfect for swimming and floating.
Pro tip: In high season, arrive early — and by early, we mean 08:30am — if you want a front-row spot.

🏝️ Konnos Beach

Great for: Stunning scenery & calm water
Konnos is one of the most beautiful bays in the region. Set between steep cliffs with turquoise water and a gently shelving shoreline, it feels almost tropical. A wonderful choice for swimming or hiring a paddleboard.

🍹 Sirena Bay

Great for: A younger, laid-back crowd
Sirena Bay has a relaxed beach bar tucked into a small cove, making it a favourite for younger visitors who want to swim, sunbathe and enjoy a drink in a slightly livelier setting. It has a casual, boho feel.

🌾 Firemans Beach

Great for: A local, quieter vibe
A peaceful, less touristy beach where you can enjoy calm, clear water and a more laid-back atmosphere. Ideal if you want to escape the busy main stretch.

🐢 Kalamies Beach

Great for: Beautiful water + a scenic bay
A very pretty bay with gentle waves and a charming little church on the point. It’s a great place for a swim before heading to nearby beachfront restaurants.

🐠 Vrysoudi Beach

Great for: Snorkelling & turtle sightings
A true locals’ beach — quieter, more natural and a great place for spotting turtles if you’re lucky. Bring a mask and snorkel.

🌞 Trinity Beach

Great for: A peaceful swim
Another local favourite, Trinity is small, sandy and calm. A lovely, crowd-free place to unwind.

Where to Stay in Protaras

The Sunrise Pearl Hotel & Spa became one of the standout highlights of our trip, and genuinely deserves its reputation as one of the best places to stay in Protaras. Elegant, calming and exceptionally well-run, it delivers the perfect blend of beachside luxury and warm Cypriot hospitality — ideal for both couples and families looking for a stress-free escape.

Location, Location, Location

The hotel sits right on the Protaras beachfront, giving you effortless access to the beautiful coastline. You can walk straight from your room to the promenade, beach, or out into town within minutes. Rooms That Feel Like a Treat

Our room was modern, spotless, and beautifully kept throughout our stay. The beds are extremely comfortable, storage is generous, and the overall layout is designed for restful, long sunny days. Many rooms offer sea views, and waking up to that turquoise water each morning is truly something special.

Pool Area & Facilities

The pool area is one of the highlights of the property. There are multiple pools to choose from, each with plenty of space and a relaxing, unhurried atmosphere. Sunbeds are allocated to guests for the duration of their stay — an absolute game-changer. No early-morning towel dashes, no stress, no competition. Just wander down whenever you’re ready.

The spa is also excellent, offering a quiet sanctuary with treatments that feel genuinely restorative.

Food & Dining

Breakfast is plentiful and varied, with something for everyone — fresh fruit, hot dishes, pastries, healthy options and more indulgent choices. The restaurants on-site are also a lovely option if you don’t feel like wandering into town, but with Protaras’ coastal dining strip just outside, you’re spoiled for choice either way.

Service & Atmosphere

What truly sets Sunrise Pearl apart is the smooth professionalism of the staff. Everyone we encountered was warm, efficient and incredibly helpful. The atmosphere is relaxed but polished, making it a very easy place to unwind.

Who This Hotel Is Perfect For

  • Couples looking for a peaceful, luxurious base
  • Families wanting convenience and comfort

✔️ Our Verdict

We would absolutely stay here again. It offers the perfect blend of comfort, location and service — a hotel that genuinely enhances your holiday rather than simply hosting it.

Best Things to Do in Protaras

This is where the area really shines. Below are the activities we personally did — along with what we genuinely thought of each experience.

Luxury Yacht Experience & Swimming With Turtles

This was, without question, one of the standout experiences of our time in Protaras. If you’re looking for something memorable, peaceful and a little bit luxurious, this yacht tour is absolutely perfect.

The tour keeps the group small, which makes the entire morning feel relaxed and personal rather than crowded or rushed. From the moment we stepped on board, the crew made us feel incredibly welcome — friendly, professional and clearly passionate about the sea and marine life around Protaras.

What to Expect on Board

You begin by cruising gently along the coastline, past dramatic rock formations and beautifully clear water that glows a surreal shade of turquoise in the sun. The deck is spacious enough to stretch out, sunbathe and simply take in the view (which I highly recommend). Soft music, a light breeze and a cold drink in hand — bliss.

As you approach the turtle area, the crew gives a short but informative briefing so everyone knows how to behave respectfully in the water. The turtles here are wild and protected, and the guides take great care to ensure the experience is natural and ethical.

Swimming With the Turtles

This part genuinely exceeded our expectations. Slipping into the water, you immediately notice how clear and warm it is — visibility is fantastic. It didn’t take long before we spotted our first turtle gliding gracefully beneath us. They’re surprisingly calm, elegant and entirely unbothered by humans as long as you keep a respectful distance.

We hovered, floated and watched them for ages. It was peaceful, magical and wonderfully humbling.

Additional Highlights

Plenty of time to swim and snorkel in different coves
Snorkelling equipment provided
Beautiful photo opportunities (both underwater and from the deck)
A relaxing pace — no rushing, no chaos, just pure enjoyment

Why We Loved It

  • It felt luxurious without being pretentious
  • The group size was small and intimate
  • The crew were exceptional
  • The scenery is stunning from start to finish
  • The wildlife encounter was ethical and unforgettable

Scuba Diving in Protaras — Options for Beginners & Certified Divers

Protaras is blessed with some of the clearest, warmest water in the Mediterranean, making it an excellent place to try scuba diving for the first time — or to enjoy a relaxed exploration dive if you’re already certified. The visibility alone makes it a dream: calm, turquoise water, minimal currents, and a gentle underwater world ideal for beginners and experienced divers alike.

Whether you’re curious about trying scuba for the very first time or want a straightforward, enjoyable dive as a qualified diver, Protaras genuinely delivers.

Option 1: Introductory Scuba Dive (No Experience Needed)

If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to breathe underwater, this is the activity for you. The introductory dive is designed specifically for complete beginners — no certification or previous experience required.

The team starts with a relaxed briefing onshore, explaining the basics of scuba, hand signals, safety, and what to expect underwater. They’re incredibly patient, friendly and very good at making nervous first-timers feel at ease.

Once in the water, you’ll begin in the shallow area until everyone is comfortable. When you’re ready, you slowly descend into deeper water with your instructor right beside you. The weightlessness, the peaceful quiet, and the sensation of gliding above the seabed — it’s unlike anything else.

What makes this special:
✔ Perfect for absolute beginners
✔ Calm, shallow conditions
✔ One-to-one or small group instruction
✔ Great underwater visibility
✔ The chance to see fish, sea grass gardens and rock formations

For many visitors, this ends up being the highlight of their holiday — and often the spark that leads to booking more dives in the future.

Option 2: Single Dive for Qualified Divers

If you already hold a diving certification (Open Water or equivalent), this experience allows you to explore Protaras’ underwater world without the entry-level briefing. It’s ideal if you’re in the mood for a peaceful, easy dive that showcases Cyprus’ famously clear water.

Expect slow, scenic diving — nothing rushed or overly technical. The guides choose locations based on visibility and sea conditions that day, ensuring you get the most out of your dive.

Typical highlights include:
✔ Beautiful rock formations and underwater arches
✔ Excellent visibility — often 20–30 metres
✔ Calm water and gentle conditions
✔ Schools of Mediterranean fish
✔ A relaxed, enjoyable pace

It’s a brilliant way to maintain your certification, enjoy the local marine life, and fit a high-quality dive into your Protaras itinerary without committing to a multi-day schedule.
